Sunday lunch is reserved for the nation’s favourite - a roast dinner - and Cardiff’s offering is mouth watering to say the least.

Roast meats, delicious vegetables and a healthy pouring of gravy have helped Sunday roasts remain a favourite of thousands of people all around the country. Most food-serving pubs do them these days but there is definitely a difference in quality and price. In no particular order, here are my top 5 Sunday roasts in Cardiff.

1. The Conway

A typical roast dinner features lamb, chicken, pork or beef, roast vegetables, served with gravy, a stock-based sauce
The Conway is situated in Pontcanna, only a stone throw away from Cathedral Road and Bute Park. The interior is bright and friendly with a living room feel as bookcases decorate the walls. Their menu is equally as inviting with rib eye, pork belly, fish and a veggie option to choose from. The food is fresh, comes with plenty of roast potatoes, gravy and generous helpings of seasonal vegetables. It’s mid range cost but absolutely worth the trip. Explore the Pontcanna area while you’re here.

2. The Potted Pig

Tucked away below ground in the city centre, The Potted Pig is a combination of rustic flair with their exposed brickwork throughout and modern decor, giving a rather grandiose appearance upon entering. Their food ranges from distinctly Welsh delicacies (cockles and laver bread) to a vast choice of meats including the classic pork and beef but also pheasant. I mean, who doesn’t want to at least have the option to eat pheasant for Sunday lunch?
The Potted Pig often offers a two-course deal which you’ll be glad of when you see the options on the menu.

3. Laguna Kitchen and Bar

If you fancy a fine dining experience for your Sunday lunch, Laguna Kitchen and Bar can deliver just

that. Part of the Park Plaza hotel, it is not on everyone’s food radar, but their excellent service and dishes (not to mention the presentation) puts this on the list as a must try. Their Sunday mains include the favourites of beef, chicken and pork with some more creative vegetarian ideas of caramelised shallot and wild mushroom wellington.

4. The Lansdowne

If you’re more a fan of the comfortable laid back pub, The Lansdowne is the right place to do just that. This pub in Canton has a smaller selection with beef and pork and a nut roast but they do Sunday roast so well. Crispy potatoes and well cooked meat all with a healthy helping of vegetables (including the very Briitish cauliflower cheese) makes this one of my favourite Sunday spots.

5. Milgi

Migli is a vegetarian restaurant with a beautiful interior of whimsical buntings and mismatched lampshades. Their dedication to sourcing food locally means they put great effort in bringing healthy, vegetarian dishes not only to the herbivores but carnivores alike. Their nut roasts are well seasoned and come with roast potatoes and lashings of gravy. Great lovely, one-off quirky place and a big thumbs up for sustainable and local food. The Roath area is also great to explore, with Roath Park, boating lake and lots of fun street art.

This is my roundup of good places for Sunday roasts in Cardiff suiting different budgets, what are some of your favourites?
