Sometimes the only way to truly relax is to leave the city behind and escape to the countryside for a couple of days

Spa breaks in Wales tend to take inspiration from the environment which surround them and nestled within the Vale of Glamorgan countryside, with two golf courses either side of it you’ll find the Vale Resort (easily accessible from Cardiff, along the M4).

It’s amazing how a scenic drive through greenery and wide open spaces can provide such an instantly calming effect, and the winding country roads which lead to the Vale do just that. Entrance to the spa is through the Chai Cafe, a pristine and atmospheric space with luxurious lotions adorning the walls – all available to purchase should you wish to create a mini-spa at home.

You’re provided with branded terrycloth attire which are perfect for that obligatory Instagram selfie, before making your way to the dressing room (it’s too glamorous to be called a changing room) complete with Hollywood style light bulb mirrors and a convenient code system for the lockers. Unlike most spas you won’t be wandering around with a key attached to your wrist – so not chic. You also get a branded drawstring bag, which is handy if you’re spending an entire day at the spa and want to pack a book, sunglasses, sun tan lotion and any other items you deem essential.

The Spa’s interior is a plush purple and bathed in a soft shimmering glow which makes your stroll to the treatment room a melodic experience.

Temple Spa champagne and truffles deluxe treatment – £75

Whether you’re a first timer or a spa addict, after a scintillating 85 minutes this treatment will transform you into an ecclesiastical being. Known as the creme de la creme of facials, it combines a hot stone massage with a warm melting mask, finishing off with a luxurious massage. The resort has partnered with Temple Spa, which offers a Mediterranean inspired collection of products and this treatment features its cult product Skin truffle – stocked by the creme de la creme of high end department stores, Harrods.

To finish off it’s back to the Chai Cafe for a glass of bubbly and a selection of delectable truffles. The treatment makes for a memorable Christmas gift for your nearest and dearest via a Spa gift card.

Top Tips for your Spa Visit

  • If you haven’t visited a spa before you may be a little nervous about what is expected of you. I suggest asking for a tour of the spa and the facilities before your visit to get a feel for your surroundings. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to the staff and tell them its your first time. The friendly staff at the Vale answered all of my nervous questions and quickly put my mind at ease.
  • Target your spa treatment to your own health needs, whether you want to boost circulation or ease recurring pain. My Spa Therapist Cayce patiently listened to my paranoid ramblings about turning 30 and dehydration, so she assured me that she would focus on hydration.
  • Make your day even more comfortable by packing your favourite book and if you have long locks don’t forget to bring a hair bobble to tie your hair up during your massage. This can be particularly useful if you’re having a scalp massage, as it prevents you from looking like a creature from Fraggle Rock.
  • Arrive early by at least one hour before your treatment to unwind and enjoy the facilities before your massage as this helps your muscles to relax. The Vale Resort offers a buffet lunch between 12 and 2 at the Chai Cafe, which is a great add on to treatments and in some cases comes as part of it.
