How to get around

Cardiff is a very compact city and can easily be explored on foot, with the majority of the attractions, shops, restaurants, hotels and parklands all within a few minutes of each other.

BusCardiff bus

Cardiff Bus run an extensive system throughout Cardiff and the area. Cardiff Bus station is located in the centre of the city on Wood Street, opposite the rail station and a short distance from the Millennium Stadium. As of 4/10/2009 most routes follow an anti-clockwise route around the city-centre, with fewer routes starting from Cardiff Bus Station. Most routes will stop in the area behind St Davids Shopping Centre. For routes and time-tables, please click here.

A regular bendy bus service connects Cardiff city centre with Cardiff Bay.

A single ticket to anywhere in the city is £1.50 adult, and £1 child. A return ticket which allows a days unlimited travel costs £3.00 adult and £2 child. Tickets are bought from the driver. You must have the exact change as drivers do not carry change.

In addition, “The Free b” shuttle bus follows a circular route that travels ant-clockwise around the city centre - linking most of the city-centre stops. See the shuttle bus timetable here, and the routemap here.

The busses run every 10 minutes - 7 days a week

Smart BikeSmart Bikes

Cardiff is a great city to negotiate by bike and is one of the quickest ways to get around. The city's easy gradients and large green parks make it ideal for cyclists. The leafy Taff Trail cycle path runs North to South along the banks of the river Taff, linking the Brecon Beacons, Castle Coch, the City centre and Cardiff Bay.

Launched in September 2009, the Smart Bikes scheme is run by OYBike and sponsored by the Council and the Welsh Assembly Government. The Paris-style scheme, allows visitors to register to use one of a fleet of 70 specially branded and recognisable bikes that will be located at 35 bike stations situated at key points around Cardiff city centre and Cardiff Bay.

Users can either pay an annual £18 registration fee or apply for weekly registration fee of £5. After that, the first 30 minutes of hire are free, and charged at small hourly rental after that. Bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any of the hire points with no need to return them to their original spot. To find out more about fees, locations and how to register, click here.
