Fun at Winter WonderlandCardiff and the region has plenty to keep the kids occupied on a fun packed family break. We have a great choice of inter-active museums, historic attractions to explore and acres of beautiful parks offering a range of outdoor activities.

 




Watersports

To try sailing or canoeing head to Cardiff Bay, which offers various water activities and events throughout the year- such as yachting competitions, jet ski displays and water polo tournaments.



Cardiff Bay

The Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre is open year round to offer more information on events and the history of the Bay.
Moored next door to the Tube is the Lightship 2000 where you can explore the light tower, engine room, cabins, and chapel or enjoy light refreshments in the ‘galley’ in an atmosphere of Christian friendship. A stones throw away from the Lightship is the Norwegian Church, this former Norwegian Seamen’s Church, where children's author Roald Dahl was baptised, has recently been rebuilt as a culture and arts centre.




Cardiff Barrage

If you want to know why we now have a freshwater lake then take a trip over to the Cardiff Bay Barrage, the best way is to travel either by Waterbus or on the Road Train. The Cardiff Bay Road Train leaves from Stuart Street hourly, and offers live commentary revealing the history of 'Tiger Bay’ and the docks. Cardiff Bay Cruises leave regularly from Mermaid Quay where you can take leisurely trips over to the barrage or up the river Taff.



Techniquest

Enter a world of science and technology at Cardiff Bay’s Techniquest, which is sure to delight children of all ages. Fancy firing a rocket, launching a hot air balloon or racing an electric car? There are over 160 hands-on exhibits with puzzles and activities to entertain the whole family. There are also shows in the Science Theatre and tours of the Universe in the Planetarium.
 



Theatres and shows

Just around the corner is the stunning Wales Millennium Centre which dominates the Cardiff Bay skyline. This purpose built Arts and entertainment venue is home to the Welsh National Opera; it also has a great variety of children's and family shows.
 
For the best pantomime and family shows in the city the New Theatre is a must visit. This Edwardian Playhouse opened in 1906, and is celebrating its centenary in 2006.



Museums

National Museum Cardiff will keep the whole family entertained for hours, with interactive exhibitions, natural history displays and children’s art workshops.
 
Set in 100 acres of countryside, St Fagans is home to one of Europe’s largest open-air museums - with free entrance and perfect for any family outing. St Fagans National History Museum has over forty buildings that have been moved brick by brick from across Wales and re-erected in the museum. Buildings include an elegant mansion house, a quarryman’s cottage, farmhouses, a terrace of six cottages, a toll-house and a Celtic village.Within the buildings working craftsmen provide displays of traditional skills.
 
Step back into history and discover Cosmeston Medieval Village, a 14th century village set in beautiful surroundings. Explore on your own or take a guided tour with a medieval villager and see with your own eyes how life was in the 14th century; or simply take a stroll around Cosmeston Lake, wetland and woodland.
 
The Rhondda Heritage Parkand the Big Pit National Coal Museum both offer fascinating insights into the rich culture and character of the South Wales mining valleys in an entertaining and educational environment for all ages. Experience life as a coal miner with underground and interactive tours, and visit a reconstructed 1950’s village street. You can even take a trip underground with ex-miners and experience how life in the mines really was!
