National Eisteddfod of Wales
2-9th August 2008 - Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff

The Eisteddfod is back in Cardiff after 30 years in 2008 and trading its usual rural location for the city centre. Taking place over a whole week and situated on Pontcanna Fields, the Eisteddfod is celebration of Welsh culture and language.
The National Eisteddfod of Wales can be traced back to 1176 when it is said that the first Eisteddfod was held, under the auspices of Lord Rhys, at his castle in Cardigan. There he held a grand gathering to which were invited poets and musicians from all over the country. A chair at the Lord's table was awarded to the best poet and musician, a tradition that prevails in the modern day National Eisteddfod.

The weeks events include concerts, competitions and ceremonies, as well as theatre and art exhibitions. This year the Eisteddfod will include performances by Bryn Terfel as well as a tribute to the legendary Ray Gravell, with some of his favourite performers. The National Orchestra of Wales and Connie Fisher (winner of the BBC's How to solve a problem like Maria) will also perform. Also on site will be 320 trade stalls, a science pavilion, a performance stage, visual arts gallery and sport areas and a 550 place caravan site.
As this years Eisteddfod heads to the capital, the urban location means you’ll only be a short walk from Cardiff’s top visitor attractions and hotels, as well as theatres, art galleries, live music venues, shops, bars, riverside cycle trails, cafes and restaurants.
