Make sure you race down to Cardiff Bay this summer!

In October, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet set off from Alicante, Spain, on an endurance race around the world. It will visit 12 cities, touch six continents – and for the first time in its history, the race will stop in Cardiff.

The Cardiff Stopover will have its own Race Village, open from Saturday 27 May to Sunday 10 June. With a variety of entertainment, Volvo Ocean Race-themed attractions and food and drink stalls, the Race Village festival site is guaranteed to appeal to a variety of people looking for an exciting day out.

1. A FREE Family Festival

To celebrate the arrival of the fleet, Cardiff Bay will be hosting a FREE festival! With a variety of entertainment including live music, Volvo Ocean Race-themed attractions and food and drink stalls, the Race Village festival site is guaranteed to appeal to a variety of people looking for an exciting day out.

Sunday 27 May: 10am – 9:30pm
Monday 28 May: 10am – 9:30pm
Sunday – Thursday: 10am – 7pm
Friday – Saturday: 10am – 9:30pm

2. First Time in Cardiff

Help us to celebrate The Volvo Ocean Race’s first stop on British shores in 12 years and its first ever visit to Cardiff, Wales. This is a fantastic opportunity for us all to give a massive Welsh welcome, and show support, to the teams bold enough to compete in the world’s toughest oceans for the ultimate sporting prize.

3. Half Term

Boat Experience

Are you looking for something to do with the kids over the half term break? Then bring them down to the Cardiff Stopover Race Village in Cardiff Bay. Take part in workshops, Try Sail sessions, circus performances and visit attractions, including Globe Cinema and the replica Volvo Ocean 65. It’s fun for the whole family! Open from 10am every day with FREE entry!

4. Volvo Ocean Race 65 Fleet

Your chance to see the boats up close! Volunteers will be on hand to explain the ins and outs of this fleet of ocean racing machines. At the Race Boat Experience you can impress your friends with a selfie behind the wheel of a model Volvo Ocean 65 racing yacht. Not only that! The Pit Lane Experience means each Team Base will be open to the public, allowing fans to see how the crews work day to day.

 

5. Street Food Extravaganza

Street FoodThe festival will have a distinctly Welsh flavour, with Welsh producers offering locally-sourced food and drink – from bars offering real ale to the most popular street food vendors.

Tasty treats on offer will include Dusty Knuckle Pizza, Fritti Italian, Vive La Crepe, Cambrian Organics, The Grazing Shed, Morgans Welsh Beef & Lamb, La Cha Cha, Gaucho BBQ & Yum Yum.

6. Live Music

Enjoy lunch with a twist, treat yourself to a smorgasbord of musical vibes. Each day the Race Village will host live music to accompany the fabulous range of street food on offer.

On certain evenings, when the site is open until 9:30pm, Sunset Sessions will be playing live music at night for the first time ever on Cardiff Bay barrage. Come and sample the delicious food and drink and unwind as the sunsets over Cardiff Bay, with music sessions curated by organisations including Trac, BBC Horizons and Sŵn.

Military Festival of Music
Saturday 2 June – A selection of Her Majesty the Queen’s finest Armed Forces bands, including The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh.

7. Drink

As befits a summer festival there will, of course, be a bar or two, serving real ales and a variety of other drinks. For the early birds in need of a caffeine boost we will have The Thirsty Elephant Coffee Company on hand to make sure you’re wide awake and ready to go.

8. Racing Days

9. The Globe Cinema

At the heart of each Race Village is The Globe where videos will give visitors an insight into the Volvo Ocean Race itself, revealing more about the characters who have raced in it over the decades, their obsession to win, and the challenges they have faced.

10. Climbing Wall

There will be a number of paid for, ticketed activities available at the site. Would be adventurers can try their hand at the climbing wall and zip-wire, or get a bird’s eye view of the action from the spectacular big wheel. Buy your tickets on the day!

11. NoFit State Circus – Lexicon

We have teamed up with NoFit State, a contemporary circus company, to bring you an unmissable combination of live music, dance, stage design and film with traditional circus skills.

Join in with the Organised Kaos Youth Circus – Workshops, where you can try your hand at static trapeze, juggling, uni-cycling and more at daily free workshops!

12. Sustainability

Did you know that single-use plastics such as coffee cups end up in the ocean? So, it’s time to wake up – and we’re not just talking about the caffeine! National Marine Aquarium Workshops will offer a variety of fun-filled workshops, focusing on the issue of one-use plastic. Meanwhile, at the heart of the Race Village, The Globe serves as a Sustainability Centre as part of the mission to raise awareness about ocean health.

13. Water Sports Activities

Ever wanted to get out on the water but don’t know where to start? Coaches will be on hand to offer taster sessions in sailing and stand-up paddle boarding. Register for your free space on the day!

14. Bae Caerdydd

As if the free festival, live music, street food and wealth of activities wasn’t enough, all of this takes place in our very own Cardiff Bay. An incredibly stunning waterfront location alongside Mermaid Quay with its fantastic selection of restaurants, cafés, bars and shops! This is the perfect opportunity to come and celebrate a world-class event in a world-class setting, what could be better than that?
