Shw’mae? That’s Welsh for ‘hello’. I’m Montserrat Prat, owner of La Cuina restaurant in Canton in Cardiff but I’m originally from a small village called Montclar in Catalonia.
If Barcelona carry on like they did in that crazy comeback against Paris Saint Germain, there could be a lot more Catalans in this city this June.
Our restaurant has become a little hub for Catalans in the city, bringing our culture to Wales through our take on traditional dishes like Bacallà (Catalan salt cod), Calçots (roasted Catalan-leek like vegetables, which go down well in Wales!) escalivada (roasted peppers and aubergines), and our popular rabbit in vinaigrette.
I moved to Cardiff 18 years ago. I like to think I’ve learned the very best that Cardiff has to offer; from arcades, castles, dining, green parks and culture. Here’s a guide to my favourite Cardiff highlights.
Why I Love Cardiff
I always like to quote my friend from Barcelona when describing Cardiff: it’s a very ‘human’ city. A capital city that has easy access to all amenities, plenty of spacious and quiet green areas. Neighbourhoods are still village-like, friendly and sociable. Its center is full of Victorian arcades, built during the era of splendor of this city. They hold lovely independent shops.

I love strolling the streets and looking at the fabric of the city. You find very singular and foreign stones that stand out in any boundary wall, a sign of its commercial past: it’s the ballast that once filled the empty ships coming to the port from all over the world to be filled with coal and out again. The social fabric is equally multicultural, another inheritance of Cardiff, the once the biggest coal port in the world.
