Counting down the best 5 halls for students to live in Cardiff...

If you’ve got your heart set on studying in Cardiff (and why wouldn’t you) then you might be wondering where to live?

Most freshers choose to live in halls of residence, at least for the first year, and Cardiff has plenty of choice. Halls have a number of advantages for new students. They’re usually close to campus so travelling time is reduced (those extra few minutes in bed before a 9 am lecture are priceless). You also get to live with lots of other people who are all in the same boat as you, so it’s really easy to make friends and settle in.

To get you started on your road to student accommodation, here is a list of the TOP 5 halls of residence in Cardiff, as voted for by real life students on Student Hut (more about them further down).

Talybont court was a lovely halls to stay in, it was very clean and spacious and very fun! The only issue was each different flat was locked with no way to get in besides a key or to knock so making friends was a bit tedious at first but once you settled in it was amazing.

- #4 Talybont Gate

Talybont Gate is a brand new, modern development with large communal areas in flats and extra facilities included.  It is part of the Talybont complex which is the largest of the University’s residences and provides a range of social amenities including excellent sports facilities. Located furthest away from the main building and still only half an hour walk or 10 minute cycle. Tesco extra just 5 minute walk away meaning shopping is never an issue. Rooms are great 3/4 bed with private bathroom, plentiful storage space and large desk. Kitchens fully equipped although the oven could probably be bigger, great size social area and sitting room. Highly recommend these halls, not as social as talybont north/south but find the right people and there’s always something going on.

- #3 Senghenydd Court

Senghenydd Court is a large hall of residence with self-catered and part catered options. It is close to the Cathays Park campus, the Students’ Union and the City Centre and is also particularly convenient for students studying Mathematics, Engineering, Physics and Astronomy or Computer Science.

Although Senghennydd were not the most luxurious halls, they were good because they were so central to everything only a 10 minute walk to uni or a 5 minute walk into town in the other direction, close to a Tesco and corner shops. Halls was definitely my best experience in uni I went in not knowing anyone and came out with friends for life I’m in my third year and we still live together now!

- #2 Talybont North

Talybont North is part of the Talybont complex which is the largest of the University’s residences and provides a range of social amenities including excellent sports facilities. This purpose-built development is situated in pleasant grounds close to large areas of parkland. It is a short walk or cycle to most of the academic buildings, including the Heath Park campus.

There is a great atmosphere in Talybont as you are surrounded by lots of like minded students. Although the halls is located quite far from the actual university campus there is a student bar and a gym located on the accommodation grounds. The room wasn’t bad but the shower was a plastic cubicle placed in the room and with relatively poor circulation the room could get quite humid. Additionally there wasn’t really any room to hang your clothes to dry if you preferred that to machine drying them. Do not go and live on Talybont if you want to have quiet nights in because that does not exist.

Reasonable sized room and en suite which was a very good size. My halls were much better and bigger than Talybont North and were at a good price compared to th very expensive Talybont gate and Court. The location was a 25 minuet walk from town for me which was fine but others weren’t as keen. Good social aspects with everyone becoming friends in the house and lots of local parties and events.
