Wally's Christmas Outlet in St David's
19th October 2009
Wally’s Delicatessen is set to open a Christmas outlet in the new St David’s. The delicatessen is taking a unit in a prime location within the new shopping centre which will be opening on October 22 to maximize sales opportunities in the run up to Christmas.
The Wally’s unit in St David’s will be located in the heart of the Grand Arcade, on the upper level crossover with The Hayes Arcade and opposite Eastside - the new restaurant quarter.
The Christmas store will sell a selection of continental cakes, biscuits, gingerbread houses, nougats, gift sets, oils and vinegars, hampers and confectionary. It will also feature a counter serving hand-made Belgian chocolates.
Wally’s proprietor Steven Salamon said: “The St David’s unit will have a similar offering to our existing store in the Royal Arcade but with a bigger display and better range of products.
“We will be offering a fantastic range of quality foods that will add an extra dimension to the mix of retailers in the shopping centre. It’s something a little bit different which we hope will attract the attention of shoppers.”
Wally’s has taken a temporary lease at St David’s for a minimum period of three months but could retain a unit in the shopping centre for up to two years.
Mr Salamon continued: “This was an opportunity to test the water in a type of trading environment we haven’t experienced before and if all goes well then it could lead to future expansion.
“Opening in St David’s in the run up to Christmas will allow us to showcase our offering to a new audience and will raise the awareness of our store in the Arcade.
“What is fantastic for us is that when my grandfather founded Wally’s in 1947, the shop was based on the former Bridge Street but that was demolished in 1981 to make way for the ice rink and multistory car park. Now, 27 years on, St David’s has been extended in that very same spot. For us to return to the location of our original shop is like turning full circle to where we first began.”
When St David’s opens on October 22, Wally’s will join a wide range of quality retailers and restaurants including Hugo Boss, Cult, Thomas Sabo, Lakeland, Jane Norman, Karen Millen and Pret a Manger.
Joanne Skilton, of the St David’s Partnership, the joint venture between CSC and Land Securities, said: “Wally’s is one of Cardiff’s best known delicatessens with a long history in the city and dedicated customers. We have worked hard to provide a unique offering of retailers at St David’s and Wally’s will be a welcome addition.”
