Further praise for Cardiff from Lonely Planet

23rd December 2009

As we prepare to wave goodbye to 2009, Lonely Planet is set to usher in the New Year with a special Mini Guide, glowing with praise for Cardiff.

The Guide takes readers on a journey around the city, exploring the best places for atmosphere, history, shopping, eating and for family days out.

It describes Cardiff as, ‘a city bursting with opportunities to escape the urban clamour’ and perfect for ‘weekend breaks thanks to its combination of shiny new shops, theatres and eateries balanced with serene open spaces.’

Cardiff & Co’s Managing Director, Richard Thomas said, “This further accolade from Lonely Planet, which recently described Cardiff as one of the best cities in Europe for a short break, is a reflection of the significant developments that have taken place in the capital and a city moving forward.”

He added, “Despite the recession, 2009 has been a year of unprecedented change in the city.  Cardiff now boasts two new state of the art sporting arenas – the new SWALEC Stadium which hosted, so successfully, the first Ashes Test between England and Australia and the Cardiff City Stadium, home to the city’s premier soccer and rugby clubs.  These facilities will be joined in the Spring of 2010 by Cardiff International White Water – an Olympic standard canoe slalom.  These facilities are complemented by the city’s hotels which have never been in better shape following considerable capital investment.

The new St David’s Shopping Centre which opened recently, anchored by the largest John Lewis outside London has breathed new life into the city-centre and has elevated Cardiff into the top six retail destination in the UK(Experian 2009).   And so, as we bid farewell to 2009, we can look forward with some optimism to 2010 and preparations for the 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor.”
