The Sleeperz Hotel, Cardiff will be presented with its prestigious RIBA award on Monday 15 November, 11.45am.
Guests will attend the presentation to see RSAW President, Pierre Wassenaar, present the prestigious RIBA Award to the award-winning architect, Peter Clash (Clash Associates), client (Sleeperz Hotel) and contractor (Cowlin Construction), on Monday 15 November.
The Sleeperz Hotel is one of seven buildings from Wales to be awarded with a internationally recognized RIBA award in 2010.
The area around Cardiff Central Station is typical of many stations around the UK, with odd-shaped pockets of redundant railway land left as the spatial demands of the modern railway shrink. This 350m² triangular site lay empty for 15 years and contributed to a general air of neglect around the station. The enterprising redevelopment of the site by a company aiming to revive the railway hotel has firmly arrested that situation, with a bold new 74-bed hotel marking the arrival into Cardiff by train and acting as a high quality catalyst for the regeneration of the wider area.
The ceremony will take place at the Sleeperz Hotel, Cardiff. Martin Knight, Jury Chair for RIBA Awards in 2010 in Wales, said:
“Excess space in hotels has always been present, and the absence of it here will not worry the majority of hotel users. The whole operational model is an innovation and the resulting construction cost per room suggests many more sites could be made to work with this sort of thinking and with clever design tailored to small sites. This is not back to basics architecture but possibly a reinvention of the city-centre hotel model for a money-conscious world.
The proximity to the railway is celebrated rather than hidden, with full height windows giving clear views of the trains passing silently behind acoustic glass, and a picture window at the end of the spine corridor offering a clear view to the station forecourt.”
