The cream of the Welsh tourism industry were awarded on Thursday 21 October, 2010 at the Vale Hotel as the National Tourism Awards gala evening was held in partnership with Visit Wales, The Wales Tourism Alliance and Quadrant.
Cardiff’s offer was well rewarded with 3 prestigious wins. The Cardiff International White Water centre achieved the outstanding accolade of ‘Best Visitor Experience’ after only opening seven months ago.
Big Pit, a working coalmine until it closed in 1980, took the esteemed ‘Sense of Place’ award. The award, which celebrates the business which gives visitors a real sense of the local area and Welshness, was presented to Big Pit for providing the visitor with an experience that is both memorable and steeped in sense of place.
In addition the Hilton Cardiff scooped the title of ‘Team of the Year’, beating competition from across the Welsh tourism industry and shortlisted among the Wales Millennium Centre and the Call of the Wild Ltd.
Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said “With record entries for this years’ awards, winners of each category can be very proud of their achievement. Being named the best in Wales is no mean feat. The dedication that these businesses show to the importance of quality and redeveloping their product to meet with consumers needs in a difficult economic climate is be applauded.
The awards evening demonstrates the importance of Wales’ £4 billion tourism industry to the Welsh economy and the quality of product that we have to offer our visitors. I’d like to offer my congratulations to all winners.”
