Christmas’ first snow falls at St David's

17th November 2010

Snow at St David's

St David’s in Cardiff was the location for the winter’s first snowfall as the shopping destination hosted a magical start to its Christmas celebrations.

Shoppers were treated to a festive evening with the snowfall complete with snowmen on The Hayes at the Christmas event while children were invited to write their letters to Santa in a special Royal Mail post box and the Salvation Army Band played. Meanwhile, Russian stilt-walkers and street entertainers walked through the shopping centre and The Hayes as the winter wonderland was created by the same snow cannons that were used in the Chronicles of Narnia and James Bond.

The event was held to begin the celebrations for Christmas at St David’s which has now officially switched on its Christmas lights to create a festive atmosphere for Christmas shoppers.

Visitor Oliver Sykes, eight, of Caerphilly, said: “I liked the snow, I thought it was really good and I liked making snowballs with my brother. There were ladies with stilts on which were really big! We came just to see it.”

Steven Madeley, centre director of St David’s, said: “We thought that creating a snowfall in Cardiff was a unique way to start Christmas – and magical as well. Our shoppers thought it was fantastic with lots stopping to watch the snow fall and have their photographs taken in it.

“Christmas is a very important time of year not only for our retailers but our shoppers too. We are expecting millions of shoppers to visit us in the run up to Christmas so we want to do everything we can to make the Christmas shopping experience as enjoyable as possible with a festive atmosphere. All our Christmas decorations are now up and our lights switched on. We will also be inviting local charities to collect for good causes with Christmas singers and bands around our Christmas tree which will also help everyone get in the Christmas mood.”
