Music for Winter Evenings at BBC Hoddinott Hall

22nd November 2010

As the weather turns colder and the darker evenings arrive, music lovers can join BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales at BBC Hoddinott Hall for two concerts that will offer some winter warmth and energy.

Stravinsky, Bruckner & Britten
Conducted by Artistic Director Adrian Partington, the BBC National Chorus of Wales will present an evening of elegant sacred music at BBC Hoddinott Hall this Friday 26 November at 7p.m.

The evening will begin with Stravinsky’s Mass, a beautifully simple, yet thought provoking work, written towards the end of his life. The evening will then move to the music of Britten and his Russian Funeral featuring the brass section of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and his Hymn to St Cecilia, the patron saint of music.

The evening concludes with Bruckner’s Second Mass, a boldly powerful work which is timeless and yet original at the same time. The choir will be accompanied by the brass and woodwind sections from BBC National Orchestra of Wales, creating a wonderfully intimate setting for an evening of choral music.

Haydn, Stravinsky & Sibelius
Last December Danish Conductor Thomas Søndergård saved the day as a last minute replacement for the Orchestra’s Brahms and Sibelius concert at St David’s Hall and was such a hit that he has been invited back. He now returns to Cardiff with another exciting concert of Stravinsky and Sibelius at BBC Hoddinott Hall on Saturday 4 December at 7p.m.

The concert will begin with Haydn’s Symphony No 92 (Oxford) before Norwegian Violinist Vilde Frang joins the Orchestra to perform Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. The evening will culminate with a performance of Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements, his musical response to the events of World War II.
