BBC National Orchestra of Wales Celebrate Christmas in style in Cardiff

BBC National Orchestra of Wales will perform a concert of festive music called Christmas Celebrations on three evenings in Swansea, Cardiff and Brecon on 14,15 and 16 December, at 7p.m.

The concerts will be conducted by Welsh conductor Grant Llewellyn, well-known for performing concerts with the Orchestra that appeal to the whole family.

Brangwyn Hall, Swansea (14 Dec), St David’s Hall, Cardiff (15 Dec) and Theatr Brycheiniog Brecon (16 Dec) will be alive with the sound of Christmas music. As well as the music on offer, activities and foyer performances promise to make these concerts truly festive occasions, designed to create a Christmas atmosphere for music lovers of all ages.

Finalist from BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010, Callum Smart will add extra sparkle to the concerts with Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, as well as  a special rendition of Mike Oldfield’s arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo, with Callum performing on electric violin.

Music also featured will include Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, Howard Blake’s famous song Walking in the Air from The Snowman, as well a selection from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and other seasonal favourites.

The young voices of choirs from Bishopston Comprehensive School, Swansea and Whitchurch High School, Cardiff, will join the Orchestra and BBC National Chorus of Wales for their respective local concerts in Swansea and Cardiff. The South Powys Music Choir and pupils from Ysgol Penmaes and Brecon High School will add their voices to celebrate the music of Christmas with BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Brecon.

The evenings will conclude with a medley of heart warming Christmas songs including Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and We Wish You a Merry Christmas for the audience to sing along before their journey home.

The concert will also be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio Wales (1p.m. and 6p.m.) and BBC Radio Cymru (6.30p.m.) on Christmas Day.
