Hilton Cardiff Opens New Metropole Lounge
9th November 2010

The five-star Hilton Cardiff has opened the exclusive Metropole Lounge, establishing the hotel as the premier meeting point in Cardiff’s city centre.
The £750,000 Metropole Lounge, which is the Hilton Cardiff’s third food and beverage outlet, will be open all day to cater to a variety of types of guests. The exclusive lounge was designed to attract businesses looking for an informal meeting location in the city, as well as city workers, visitors new to the area and shoppers seeking relaxation. The all-day menu includes three bespoke afternoon teas, and staff have attended specialist training to establish them as ‘tea experts’.
The official launch saw the exterior of the hotel turned ‘pink’ for the night with 250 guests treated to miniature samples of the Metropole Lounge’s menu, hundreds of cupcakes and cakes from its trademark afternoon tea. Mixologists created cocktails from the spirit ice bar, Champagne and Champagne infused chocolates, sorbet and fruit were served from the Pommery bar and cupcakes filled a giant cup and saucer and a floor-to-ceiling cake stand with a mad hatter and tea experts demonstrating the art of tea making. Music was provided by the Metropole entertainers on the grand piano and saxophone while Nicholas Whitehead wowed guests opened a bottle of Champagne with a sabre sword and television presenter Matt Johnson from This Morning attended to help launch the lounge bar.
General manager Marie Fagan said: “When designing the Metropole Lounge, we saw a large gap in the Cardiff market for a lounge bar with all-day appeal. The Metropole Lounge is unique in the city centre in terms of its offering for businesses, shoppers and visitors. We have appointed a new team to manage the lounge and carried out specialist training to create unrivalled expertise to match the high-quality food and drink available.
“Since the opening of St David’s and John Lewis, Cardiff has attracted a new style of shopper, and the Metropole Lounge’s afternoon tea menu has been developed to specifically target this special market.”
The Metropole Lounge refurbishment has transformed the ground floor of the Hilton Cardiff. The open-plan lounge bar has slate flooring, feature furniture, ground floor toilets and a refurbished lobby area. Open from 8am until midnight, the lounge has an all-day menu that will offer brunch, lunch, canapés, platters and chocolate fondue as well as the three varieties of afternoon tea – including a tailored Welsh version. The hotel’s sommelier has also selected a range of wines and Champagne along with cocktails, beers and soft drinks.
The Metropole Lounge is now open for business after its official launch on 4 November. See more about the Hilton Cardiff.
