Fair Trade Fashion Show brings whole world to Wales

11th May 2010

Fair Do's

Fair Do's, Cardiff’s first fair trade shop, will be holding its annual fashion at Calvary Baptist Church, Cowbridge Road East, Canton, Cardiff on Saturday 22 May 2010 at 7.30pm.

Models will strut their stuff wearing the latest fair trade fashion sourced from around the world – with clothing, accessories and jewelery from three continents. All the items on sale on the night will be fairly traded, meaning the people who made them will benefit too.

Jan Tucker, founder of Fair Do’s, believes Fair Trade Fashion makes a real difference. “In over 25 years of working in fair trade, I have met many people from the developing countries who speak of the real difference that fair trade makes. These are people who want to work their way out of poverty, and we can help them simply by choosing to wear fairly traded clothes.”

Despite the recession, interest is high in fair trade, as Jan explains. “Many of our customers have told us that the economic situation has made them think more carefully about how they spend their money. It’s very encouraging that so many people make fair trade a priority. This year – as in every year – we are telling people to book their tickets for the fashion show early, because we always sell out and the show is as popular as ever.”

There will also be a special guest at the Fair Trade Fashion Show, Leah Mitula of Denur Crafts. She will be talking about the handmade jewelery produced by her company in Kenya, which offers employment opportunities to women, especially single parents. The beautiful jewelery produced by Denur Crafts will also be on sale after the show.

Tickets are £4 and include a glass of fruit juice, or cup of tea or coffee. There will also be a huge range of fairly traded goods available for sale, as Jan explains: “There will be clothes and accessories from a huge range of fair trade companies, offering a range of styles to suit all tastes, at prices to suit all wallets.”

“The fashion-conscious and ethically-minded population of Cardiff will see up to the minute fashion, classic styles, traditional craft skills, in a range of guaranteed fair trade clothes, many of which have the added bonus of being 100% organic.”

Tickets are already selling fast so people are being asked to buy in advance from Fair Do's, 10 Llandaff Road, Canton, Cardiff CF10 9NJ, or by phoning (029) 2022 2066. Enquiries can also be made by email here.
