New links for Cardiff with Pont-y-Werin
13th July 2010

The official opening of the Pont-y-Werin (the new bridge over the Ely River) by Ieuan Wyn-Jones AM, is due to take place on Wednesday July 14th.
The new bridge completes a circular route which includes the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path (with the bridge by the Norwegian Church and path linking to the Barrage), and consists of an approximatly 10k circular off-road route.
Lee Waters, Director of Sustrans Cymru, said:
"Pont y Werin will truly be a people's bridge. Voted for by the public and named by local children, the bascule bridge will not only open for boats, but it will open the way for people to get from Cardiff Bay to Penarth and beyond in more sustainable ways. By completing a circuit around the Bay this new bridge will be a superb new local facility for everyday travel in the city as well as a national landmark."
Funding from the new bridge has come from the Welsh Assembly Government, £1.65m, Cardiff Council, £1.3m, sustainable transport charity Sustrans £1.15m, Cardiff Harbour Authority £250k and £200k from The Vale of Glamorgan Council. The Big Lottery Fund grant was awarded to the Sustrans Connect2 project after the scheme won the People's Millions Lottery context on ITV1 in December 2007.
