Stephen Fry – Twitterific Cardiff

14th July 2010

Stephen Fry

A writer, presenter and actor, an international rugby star and the former head of MI5 are amongst those to be honoured by Cardiff University at its annual degree ceremonies (July 12-16).

Stephen Fry, Martyn Williams and Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller join eight other eminent individuals from the fields of law, culture and public health, amongst others, to receive Honorary Fellowships.

Receiving his award at a ceremony in Cardiff (14 July), Stephen Fry tweeted glowingly in praise of the capital city.  He said, “Must say Cardiff is looking spankingly good in the late afternoon sunshine. Castle is gleaming, Town Hall glowing. Much to like here.”  His words will not have gone unnoticed by his followers on Twitter, over 1.6 million of them.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have achieved international distinction in their field. This year the University is also recognising one of Wales’ leading politicians. Rhodri Morgan receives the University’s first Honorary Degree and has been appointed an Honorary Distinguished Professor to help enhance the University’s growing reputation for leading research in Welsh governance and politics.

More than 7000 students will graduate in this year’s ceremonies, and approximately 19,000 people will be welcomed to Cardiff for the celebrations. The event is one of the biggest in the University’s calendar and it will be the first time University President Professor Sir Martin Evans – recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Medicine – has presided over the ceremonies.
