Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend coming up

26th July 2010

The Blackout

The Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend (July 30-Aug1) returns to the magnificent setting of City Hall lawn, with three days of the finest free live music from Wales and the world on the big stage, along with the white knuckle rides and traditional family attractions of the UK’s largest travelling funfair all weekend around the avenues of the Civic Centre.

Friday night in conjunction with Sŵn Festival sees Merthyr Tydfil’s finest, The Blackout headline a bill that also features Los Campesinos!, Racehorses, and Samoans.

Saturday begins with the 21st annual Cardiff MAS Carnival bringing the city centre alive to the theme of Cosmic Celts, Celtic tribes of the year 3,000, with flamboyant costumes and carnival creations, masks and headpieces, giant puppets on backpacks and mobile sculptures making their way from Cardiff Bay at 11.30am to City Hall lawn.

Music kicks off on the big stage at 2pm, and runs all the way up through the likes of Congo Allstars and saxophone legend Pee Wee Ellis and the Funky Assembly, to headliners Chaka Demus and Pliers, who promise to please everyone with big hits such as Tease Me.

Sunday’s line-up is strong throughout the day, with music from 2pm and highlights including Athlete and bill-toppers Feeder, the band who started in nearby Newport and went on to win Kerrang! Awards, sell over a million albums and notch up 20 Top 40 singles.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said: “Another fabulous Big Weekend is in store for Cardiff, thanks to our supporters and friends at Admiral, and we expect a bumper crowd of music fans and fair-goers to make it a memorable weekend.”

Nic Weng Kan, UK Director of Operations at Admiral said: “We’re thrilled to once again be sponsoring what looks set to be another brilliant Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend.  I’m sure hundreds of Admiral staff will join the thousands of people attending over the three days, and I hope they all have a wonderful time.”

Cardiff Festival is a series of events that include live music, street theatre, open-air theatre, children’s entertainment and funfairs. Cardiff Festival 2010 will provide a mix of popular, well-established and new events that take place in the city centre and around Cardiff Bay.
