New chapter for Spillers Records
29th July 2010
Today marks a new chapter in the story of Spillers Records, the world’s oldest record shop as it opens its door in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade following a move from the Hayes.
Spillers was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller in the Queen’s Arcade, Cardiff, where the shop specialized in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs. In the late 1940s, the shop moved around the corner to larger premises on the Hayes.
Ashli Todd will take over the running of the business from her father, Nick Todd who managed the shop on the Hayes for the past three decades.
Spillers which sells compact discs and vinyl records enjoys a reputation of being able to get their customers whatever they want. The shop is a favourite with local bands such as the Manic Street Preachers and the Super Furry Animals who frequently perform there.
Hywel Thomas a spokesperson for Cardiff & Co, the organisation charged with promoting the city said, “Spillers Records is part of the city’s cultural heritage – it is unique and contributes to the distinct character of the city. It seems fitting that the shop will be moving into one the city’s arcades - another distinctive feature in the city’s charm and appeal. We wish Ashli and everyone involved in Spillers, the very best.”
