Wales Millennium Centre welcomes Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre!
2nd September 2010
The Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre is moving to a new home at the Wales Millennium Centre, to make way for the next phase in the Bay’s development.
The transformation of the area around Roath Basin is now very much underway, reflecting the ongoing confidence about the future success and economic development of Cardiff Bay.
The BBC Drama Village will open in the coming 12 months, with the BBC relocating some of its best-loved television shows such as Casualty, Dr Who and Pobol y Cwm to Cardiff Bay.
The area near Roath Basin is the last major piece to be developed in the Inner Harbour, and will be sure to attract a new phase of shops, bars and industry to the area. The access road that is needed to link up the final piece of the jigsaw means that the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre, known locally as the Tube, needs to move from its current location to make way for the road connecting Roath Basin to the rest of the Bay.
In September it will re-open as the newest centre in Visit Wales’ ‘Tourist Information Centre’ (TIC) Network. The Council plans to store the old Tube structure, should funding be found to update and restore the building at a later date, with a possible option of having it on the Graving Docks, overlooking the waters edge.
The Tube will close in its current location at 6pm on Monday, August 30 before re-opening as a Tourist Information Centre at the Wales Millennium Centre, in early September; with an exciting new look in line with the rest of the network, reflecting a strong Welsh identity.
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “This is a fantastic phase in the Bay story. Today Cardiff Bay is a much loved area of the city and is home to a growing number of attractions and businesses.
“As the area continues to grow, partnerships are formed and services that are established develop, as part of the Council’s wider commitment to serve the local community, national and international visitors. I very much look forward to visiting the newest TIC in the very heart of an iconic building already on the international map.”
Mathew Milsom, Wales Millennium Centre, General Manager said, ‘To make provision for a TIC within Wales Millennium makes perfect sense, as it is Wales’ Number 1 visitor attraction. We look forward to welcoming more visitors to the Centre, and we hope many will be encouraged to return to see a show, too.’
Visitor Centre staff are looking forward to welcoming old and new visitors alike, keeping in touch with the demands of current users, international visitors and school groups that make up a large percentage of the 200,000 strong visitor figures each year.
Our fully trained staff at the centre will be on hand seven days a week, with extended opening hours during performance days at Wales Millennium Centre.
