Katerina Karnéus joins BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a performance of Mahler’s Third Symphony in Cardiff
23rd September 2010
Since winning BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 1995, Stockholm born Katarina Karnéus has shot to prominence and now appears at the world’s greatest concert halls, festivals and opera houses. The impressive and striking mezzo soprano will join BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Friday 1 October at St David’s Hall, Cardiff at 7.30pm to perform Mahler’s Symphony No 3.
From its opening primeval theme, thundered out by eight horns, to its exultant earth shattering close, Mahler’s symphony is a journey of discovery like no other. The composer’s Third Symphony is one of the most extravagant all-embracing symphonies ever written, with an impact that will fill every corner of St David’s Hall. Mahler himself spoke of it as being “of such magnitude that it mirrors the whole world.”
Renowned Japanese conductor Tadaaki Otaka, the Orchestra’s Conductor Laureate, will use his special relationship with the Orchestra and his exceptional experience of conducting Mahler’s work to create an occasion not to miss.
Orchestra, conductor and soloist will also be joined by the massed women’s voices of BBC National Chorus of Wales and the Boys of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester Cathedral Choirs to produce an amazing choral sound world for the work.
Tickets for the concert are on sale from £10 to £25 and are available from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line on 0800 052 1812.
