Wales’ First Night-time Marathon to start at St David’s

7th September 2010

Shine Cardiff 2010

Wales’ first night time marathon is set to take place this month from outside St David’s in Cardiff.

SHINE Cardiff 2010 is a 26 mile walk lit up with illuminated helium balloons across the city and is taking place on Saturday, September 25th, starting at 9pm from outside the shopping centre. Thousands of people are expected to be taking part and it is hoped it will become an annual event.

Anyone wanting to participate can sign up at a SHINE event on Wednesday, September 8th, outside St David’s - near Bellini’s, TGI Fridays and the cinema – from 6pm.

Steven Madeley, centre director of St David’s, is congratulating all planning on taking part. He said: “Cancer Research UK is such a respected charity and we are proud to be able to support to this event and the charity’s life-saving work. St David’s has become a landmark destination and we will be delighted to be cheering off the participants as they take on the challenge.”

Nic Clarke, marketing manager for Shine Cardiff said: “We are very excited to be holding our first night-time walking marathon in Wales and have been over-whelmed by the support we have received from men and women in South Wales.  There is still the opportunity to enter and join over 1,500 people already registered to take part.”

Starting outside St David’s with a mass warm up, the illuminated balloons will guide the thousands across the barrage to Penarth Marina, back into the city centre to Victoria Park and then home via Pontcanna Fields. Those wishing to take up the full 26 mile challenge will head north as far as Whitchurch golf club before returning with some of the cities landmarks such as the Millennium Stadium and Wales Millennium Centre lit up along the way.
