Cyclist’s award-winning green commute takes in tourist sights
18th January 2011
The best sights in Cardiff feature in an award-winning video by green commuter Steve Castle.
Steve’s short film about his daily commute by bicycle between his home in Penarth and his workplace in Llandaff won a prize in a UK-wide competition to make a short film about the National Cycle Network.
On his journey home Steve passes Llandaff Catherdral and uses the Taff Trail through Pontcanna Fields and Bute Park.
Steve said: "I go through Bute Park and see the herons and the jays and you can even watch the seasons change throughout the year. Cycling really does open your eyes to what's around you and you just don't get that experience sitting in a car.
“Cardiff is a small city and so easy to get across by bike. Even over the winter I've kept it up - the rain isn't great but it's still not as bad as you think.”
Steve’s ride also takes him past Cardiff Castle, then on by the Millennium Stadium and the Wales Millennium Centre before crossing the Cardiff Bay Barrage to reach Penarth. One of the latest developments in Cardiff Bay, the opening of the Pont y Werin Bridge across the Rive Ely has given him a shorter option by avoiding the circle round Cardiff Bay.
Steve added: "I'm new to cycling to work but once I started I really enjoyed it and now I'm a total convert. Pont y Werin bridge opening inspired me to make a film about how I get to and from work.” The charity Sustrans named Steve as the winner in the over 18s category in its National Cycle Network video competition.
Lee Waters, Director of Sustrans Cymru, said: “Cardiff is ideal for cycling. It’s flat and compact – a real delight. Door to door, cycling is the quickest form of transport. “If the city can build on the bikes for hire scheme it has already started, it could become one of the top cycling cities in Europe.“ Steve won a luxury-four night break in a log cabin, courtesy of Forest Holidays.
