It’s Oscar time in Los Angeles and Mermaid Quay is celebrating with a special Hollywood Half Term Week (19th – 27th February). Come on down to the Mermaid Quay – in the very heart of Cardiff Bay – to take part in our host of star-studded, glitzy, glamorous events and activities for all the family.
Start the week with movie music mayhem with Tony Bowen’s acoustic performances of favourite hits from Hollywood hits live on the Quayside from 12noon to 4pm on Saturday 19 February. From Rocky’s Eye of the Tiger to The Graduate’s Mrs Robinson, from Moon River to the theme from Flash Gordon, enjoy The Music of Hollywood.
Sunday 20 February, Pudsey Bear will be teaming up with Ceroc South Wales for some Bollywood dancing. Apparently Pudsey is a big fan of movies such as Slumdog Millionaire. Plus there will be Ceroc workshops during the afternoon – 10am to 4pm.
Budding Oscar winners should head on down to the Quayside on Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 February for our Hollywood-theme drama workshops. All ages will be catered for, with 45-minute long workshops led by our experienced, professional drama teachers starting on the hour from 12noon to 4pm each day. Pre-book by e-mailing Julie.wood@mermaidquay.co.uk with the age(s) of your child/children and day on which you would like attend. We’ll get back in touch with the times of appropriate workshops.
Thursday 24 and Friday 25, sees the Hollywood Walk of Fame treasure hunt hit town. Pick up your entry form from the marquee and find the stars around the Quayside to win fun prizes fit for a movie star.
If you fancy a bit of celebrity spotting, get down to Mermaid Quay on Saturday 26 February 12noon to 4pm to see which A-listers are in town. Are they the real thing? No-one knows, but the crazy paparazzi spying on the stars certainly think they are. But watch out, the photographers are easily confused and might start chasing you. Plus, if you fancy yourself as a celebrity lookalike, we have some great spot prizes for any members of the public that look like a star. Vouchers for meals for two.
And, just before the credits roll, Sunday 27 February (12 noon – 4pm) is our spectacular Dress to impress Hollywood fancy dress competition. Come as your favourite movie star to win your very own Oscar. Under 10 and over 10 categories.
Plus many of Mermaid Quay’s restaurants, cafés, shops and other outlets are getting in on the act with special Hollywood offers, promotions and activities.
Pop into Fabulous Welshcakes for star-shaped Welshcakes. Or visit Gourmet Burger Kitchen to enter their Hollywood quiz which runs all week. Or check out the Oscar-theme party at the VIP Lounge.
Meanwhile, Castle Galleries has loads of fabulous Hollywood theme art and Polka Dot has some fun “clapper board” photoframes as well as necklaces featuring Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
Half term is more fun by the water!
