Cardiff shoppers bring city to life

22nd February 2011

Shoppers in Cardiff have celebrated the arrival of the LEGO store to St David’s by constructing a giant LEGO landscape of the city from thousands of red LEGO bricks.

The three-day grand opening event invited visitors to take part in the hands-on freeform build and to create sculptures of their favourite city landmarks. Over 80,000 red LEGO bricks were used by shoppers of all ages to construct the ‘buildings’, which included Cardiff Castle, the Senedd, the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff City Hall and Welsh dragons of all different shapes and sizes.

Brick by brick, the models came together to form a giant high impact LEGO landscape of the city, displayed in its finished form in the Atrium area of St David’s by the LEGO store team

Four children from the Rosser family in Birchgrove took part in the event. Cian Rosser, aged seven, said: "It was amazing to see the Cardiff buildings being built in red" and Esyllt Rosser, ages eleven, said: "The best thing was the dragon. I got to make one myself too!"

St David’s, owned by St David’s Partnership, a joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres, is the first shopping destination in Wales to offer shoppers access to the LEGO brand, one of the world’s largest toy manufacturers.

Steven Madeley, centre director of St David’s, said: “The grand opening event was a great success and attracted attention from thousands of shoppers, many of whom got involved in the build and contributed towards the finished product.

“We are delighted to offer shoppers in Wales exclusive access to such a highly sought after brand and this was a great way to officially welcome the store to St David’s.”

Situated on the lower level of Grand Arcade in St David’s, the Lego Store itself is only the fifth to be opened in the UK and has already proved particularly popular amongst some of the centre’s youngest visitors.

Over the course of the three-day event shoppers were also invited to enter into a raffle for the chance to win their own LEGO Tower Bridge.

The LEGO store will now look to host a number of subsequent events to encourage children and families in Wales to join together and to experience the creativity and vision of the LEGO brand. If you missed out on this event, you can join the LEGO team in the LEGO St David’s store on Saint David’s Day (March 1st) to build a miniature Welsh Dragon.
