Sell out concert for St David’s Day and BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales
24th February 2011
BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales will perform a St David’s Day celebration concert at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on March 1st at 7p.m. Tickets have sold out, but there is still chance for passers by to join the celebrations as the concert will be broadcast live to The Hayes on the BBC Big Screen outside the hall. The concert will be presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas and will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
There is a waiting list for return tickets from £10 to £25.00. People can go on the waiting list by calling the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line on 0800 052 1812.
The Orchestra will be conducted by New York’s Grammy award winning conductor Andrew Litton and will be joined by pianist Llŷr Williams, a line up of top vocalists, the mighty BBC National Chorus of Wales and children from County Youth Choirs from across Wales.
Wales own Llŷr Williams will perform Rachmaninov’s popular Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a brilliant and sometimes nostalgically evocative tribute to the spirit of the demon fiddler, Paganini, on whose theme the work is based.
With the critical acclaim of last year’s Carnegie Hall recital behind him and currently engaged in giving a cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas, Llŷr Williams has emerged as one of the leading pianists of his generation.
Carl Orff’s famous choral work Carmina Burana completes the evening’s programme where the powerful massed voices of BBC National Chorus of Wales, County Youth Choirs and pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch will be heard alongside the stunning vocals of soprano Sarah Tynan, young tenor Allan Clayton (former BBC New Generation Artist) and baritone Christopher Maltman (Cardiff Singer of the World Lieder Prize Winner).
Orff’s work has often famously been used to create drama in television programmes and adverts such as the Old Spice advert and The X Factor, expressing humanity in all its moods – joyous, dark and tender.
Opening with music devoted to the coming of spring, it makes the perfect choice for St David’s Day.
