St David's Day at St David's
26th February 2011
St David’s in Cardiff is hosting a special celebration this St David’s Day to raise vital funds for its official charity, Marie Curie.
More than 40 volunteers from city firms will be dispatched around the shopping destination to encourage shoppers to buy a daffodil pin in exchange for a donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The teams from 8 companies will be competing against each other to see who can sell the most amount of daffodils – which are Marie Curie’s emblem – and raise the most for the charity.
Firms participating include the St David’s management team, Cardiff Airport, British Airways, Co-operative Bank, Natwest, RBS, Admiral and Tata Color Steel. The money raised will assist the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth which costs more than £3.9m a year to fund with 70% coming from voluntary donations. The 30 bed hospice offers high quality care for patients with cancer and other illnesses along with respite care.
Penny Reeves, of Marie Curie Cancer Care Wales and West, said: “The daffodil is a sign of hope which is why it is our charity emblem. St David’s Day is a huge opportunity to promote the amazing work the charity does and to raise money for the local charity at St David’s. It would be fantastic to raise £1,000 on the day. Every £20 provides an hour of care at the hospice so £1,000 would support a whole week.”
Steven Madeley, centre director of St David’s, Wales’ biggest shopping destination, said: “There will be a great atmosphere in St David’s on St David’s Day with this friendly competition between the firms. We will be doing our utmost to raise as much money as possible for a very worthwhile and local cause.
“We would like to urge all our shoppers on St David’s Day to dig deep and make a donation to Marie Curie and to wear their patriotic daffodil with pride.”
