Fair Do’s - it’s Fairtrade fortnight in Cardiff

27th February 2011

Fair Do's Siopa TegFairtrade Fortnight is under way in Cardiff, with Fair Do’s the Cardiff-based not-for-profit company in the vanguard.

Fair Do’s, based in the Canton area of West Cardiff, began as an independent business set up by Jan Tucker and moved to its current location in 1998. Jan had previously run a regional stockbase for Traidcraft.

To mark Fairtrade, Fair Do’s is taking its wares out and about round the city.

On March 5th & 12th, they will have a stall at the pop up shop that Fair Trade Wales is running in Morgan Arcade.

On March 7th from 2pm to 4pm and again from 5pm to 5.45pm, two olive farmers from Palestine, will be at the Morgan Arcade shop with a stall of Palestinian produce.

March 9th from 3.30pm to 5.30pm Fair Do’s co-host a Divine Tea Party with Canton Uniting Church, Cowbridge Road East. Special guests will be two women farmers from the Kuapa Kokoo cocoa co-operative in Ghana. They grow cocoa for Divine chocolate.

March 19th 11am - 4pm stall at the National Museum at Park Place at an event run by BRASS, Cardiff University to highlight ethical fashion. They will using fair trade clothing from Fair Do's for a fashion show during the day.

Jan commented: “We are supplying products on a sale or return basis for any group wanting to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. Dozens of churches, workplaces and schools already signed up to do this. We'll also be having visits to our shop from several schools during the fortnight.

“We pride ourselves on being one of the best Fair Trade shops in Wales, with a huge range of gifts, clothing, greetings cards, foods, snacks, beverages, and just about anything else you can think of.

“The majority of products we sell come from the developing world and because of our belief in fair trading terms, we can guarantee that buying those products directly benefits the people that produced them.

“We try to make sure that everything in our shop is bought from suppliers who carry the fair trade mark, or have been accredited by the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) or the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). Occasionally we stock products from the UK or Europe that still fit into our Fair Trade ethos, either because they use fairly traded ingredients or help small, marginalised groups.

“We also have an array of educational materials available to members of the public. We frequently open the shop for groups by prior arrangement outside of our regular opening hours (e.g. in evenings). A number of our passionate supporters also use our 'sale or return’ service to spread the Fair Trade message in schools, churches, workplaces and at community events.”
