Capital leads the way for St David’s Day
28th February 2011
Cardiff is the place to be for St David’s Day as the celebrations roll out for the patron saint of Wales.
The city will be buzzing as the annual St David’s Day parade makes its way from City Hall to The Hayes. The half-hour parade will be followed by traditional music in The Hayes, on the doorstep of the new St David’s Dewi Sant complex between 1pm and 2pm.
Inside St David’s more than 40 volunteers from city firms will be dispatched around the shopping destination to encourage shoppers to buy a daffodil pin in exchange for a donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The teams from eight companies will be competing against each other to see who can sell the most daffodils – which are Marie Curie’s emblem – and raise the most for the charity.
Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment service, is celebrating by offering free admission to all its directly managed monuments in Wales for the day. These include Castell Coch, the 'fairytale'-style castle built on medieval remains, and one of the great medieval castles, Caerphilly Castle. Access to Caerleon Roman Fortress Baths and Blaenafon Ironworks continues to be free throughout the year.
Visitors to The Hayes will be able to catch the sell-out St David’s Day concert by the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. Tickets for the 7pm concert at St David’s Hall have sold out but passers by can join the celebrations as the concert will be broadcast live to The Hayes on the BBC Big Screen outside the hall. The concert will be presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas and will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
At the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, pupils from Albert Primary School will entertain with traditional Welsh songs at 11am. Welsh National Opera take over at 1pm with their own contribution the saint’s day celebration from the free Glanfa stage in the foyer area.
