Ready, Steady, Splash!
28th February 2011
Cardiff Bay springs into life as rowing sets the scene for a season of action on the water, with the Head of the Taff making a welcome return to our city! With Sailing Regattas on the Bay and a variety of thrilling white knuckle events hitting Cardiff International White Water; CIWW, Cardiff again proves itself as the capital of Watersports!
Rowing enthusiasts from across Wales and the UK are heading to Cardiff on Saturday March 5th for an ‘oar-some’ event along the River Taff. Starting at Cardiff Castle, this 3,500m challenge of speed and endurance sees crews of rowers competing to gain the fastest time as they cross the finishing line into Cardiff Bay.
Organised by Cardiff City Rowing Club all classes of boats attend this event, now in it’s 7th year. Everyone is welcome to cheer along the edges of the Taff, and join in at the finishing line at Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre. This event is the first in a host of events at Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre (CBWAC), based at Channel View Centre and CIWW. To register visit www.cardiffcityrc.com or visit www.cbwac.com.
New this year is the Water Safety Symposium at CIWW, on 13th of March 2011. The day will be comprised of short workshops dedicated to getting and staying out of trouble for kayakers and open boaters. Each workshop will focus on basic practical skills utilising what your average boater would carry. Held in the sheltered waters of CIWW, this day is a must for those venturing out into rivers and seas over the coming months.
The range of the workshops will also include some essential, basic first aid skills that are sometimes required for boating in the UK. Led by trained staff that have real life experience in boating around the world, everyone with an interest in paddling is welcomed to get in touch and book now! Contact CIWW on 029 2082 9970 or visit www.ciww.com for more details.
All ages and abilities will test their skills on the Bay this summer, as enrolment commences at Cardiff Sailing Centre, part of CBWAC located on the Barrage. Dinghy sailing can be anything from a gentle cruise to high speed planing. Whatever you choose, there is a sailing course on offer to match your ability, size and experience. Working closely with the Welsh Yachting Association, their courses are run to the guidelines and recommendations of the Royal Yachting Association which is the national governing body for sailing in Britain.
In June, Cardiff Yacht Club, based on the edge of Cardiff Bay, host their annual regatta in association with Welsh Yachting Association. Cardiff Bay Yacht Club follow suit the same month welcoming members and non members to race in their annual regatta, so it really is a packed season on Cardiff Bay.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “The Bay is now a destination of choice for so many watersports enthusiasts; it is almost hard not to get involved. We hope that by showcasing these activities in the safe waters of Cardiff Bay and at the purpose built facilities of CIWW and CBWAC, those cheering from the edges will be encourage to come along and have a go! Cardiff Bay is already making waves this spring!”
