Cardiff awarded coach friendly status

21st March 2011

Confederation of Passenger TransportCardiff has become the first city in Wales to be awarded the status of coach friendly by the Confederation of Passenger Transport.

The Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT) is recognised by the Government as the voice of the bus, coach and light rail industries. The status of coach friendly recognises the investment and commitment made in providing facilities for coaches.

On Monday, March 21 at Sophia Gardens Coach Park, Executive Member for Transport and Transportation, Cllr Delme Bowen and Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones will recieve the award from Simon Posner, Chief Executive of CPT UK. In awarding the title the confederation noted the city’s commitment to coach facilities, particularly praising the coach park facilities at Sophia Gardens, which offers city centre parking for coaches.

The Council also provides on-street coach parking bays which are located at various sites throughout the city, including Corbett Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

Executive Member for Transport and Transportation, Cllr Delme Bowen, said: “As the Welsh Assembly Government’s first Sustainable Travel City, Cardiff actively promotes sustainable travel within the capital and I am proud that we are now also the first city in Wales to receive the coach friendly status.

“As a Council we have invested heavily in providing facilities to coaches within the city and we hope to extend this commitment further by introducing additional facilities in Cardiff Bay, improving signage to facilities and introducing the use of variable message signs where appropriate to assist coach operations.”
