Les Misérables composer tells the tale of Cleopatra
21st March 2011
Cleopatra at the New Theatre
Les Misérables and Miss Saigon composer Claude-Michel Schönberg has teamed up with Northern Ballet to tell the passionate and sensual story of Egyptian Queen Cleopatra at the New Theatre from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 April.
Stunning sets, lavish costumes and live music will transport audiences back to Ancient Egypt as Cleopatra’s tale is expertly played out to a brand new score written by Claude-Michel. Prepare to be captivated by the unique blend of dance and drama choreographed by David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director of Northern Ballet.
This epic tale looks at the life and loves of one of the most famous women in world history. The ultimate independent woman, Cleopatra counted Mark Anthony and Julius Caesar among her many lovers, yet also proved a strong ruler of her people and a mother to her young children.
Although not widely performed in ballet, Cleopatra’s story has fascinated generations of artists from Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra to the 1963 Hollywood film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. More recently it has been announced that Catherine Zeta Jones is to star in a musical film about the Egyptian Queen, proving that the legacy of Cleopatra is still as fascinating today as it was 2000 years ago.
Cleopatra is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 April. Tickets* range from £7.50 – £26.50 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk
*Tickets are subject to a 50p Seating Improvement Contribution and online sales carry a small transaction charge
