New restaurant and convenience store to open at St David's
7th March 2011

St David’s is set to welcome an award-winning restaurant and its first convenient grocery store to the shopping destination in the heart of Cardiff.
Award-winning new eaterie concept Red Hot World Buffet & Bar will bring a global taste to Cardiff. The new 10,274 sq ft restaurant over two levels will be located on Hills Street opposite Debenhams. Due to open this summer, Red Hot World Buffet & Bar will offer a unique world buffet concept with 120 food items from nine cuisines including Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Tex Mex, Cajun, Thai, Mediterranean and British. The food will be freshly prepared at live counters by more than 35 chefs allowing diners to mix cuisines as they desire.
Meanwhile, international corporation Tesco has signed up to open its Tesco Express format store within St David’s. The 4,083 sq ft externally fronted store will be located on Tredegar Street at the start of The Hayes, near to hair and beauty salon Kamigata and opposite John Lewis customer collection point.
The Tesco Express store will be based on Tredegar Street near the lower level of Grand Arcade and will offer a one-stop convenient grocery shop for shoppers, city workers and for the homeowners living above St David’s in luxury residential scheme Hayes Apartments.
Steven Madeley, centre director for St David’s which is a joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres, said: “We are committed to offering the best new retail concepts to our shoppers and the best new catering brands. The arrival of Red Hot World Buffet & Bar adds to an already strong catering mix at St David’s giving our shoppers value for money coupled with a new and lively dining experience.
“The diversity at St David’s will also be strengthened by our first convenience store. Tesco is the UK’s biggest retailer and its Tesco Express store has been successfully rolled out nationwide. Its commitment to open a store within St David’s is thanks to the great city location and high footfall that the St David’s offers. Not only will the store provide a convenience food offering for our visiting shoppers but will also be welcomed by those in the new Hayes Apartments above.”
Helen Dhaliwal, joint director of Red Hot World Buffet & Bar, said: “Red Hot World Buffet is delighted to have received such a warm welcome from the people of Cardiff. The city is visited by thousands for its culture, sporting and hospitality to name a few and Red Hot World Buffet is hoping to add a new dimension to this already colourful city. We aim to bring a unique concept and experience of dining, unmatched anywhere else, adding to the vibrance of the city.”
A Tesco spokesperson added: “St David’s is a world class shopping centre and we’re confident a new Express store will complement the fantastic mix of fashion retailers, restaurants and cafes on offer. The store will also create around 30 new jobs that will be prioritised for local people and the team will get actively involved in community initiatives that will directly benefit Cardiff.”
The latest deals follows a series of high profile lettings in St David’s with the shopping centre going from 81 stores trading in January 2010 to 116 at the year end after 37 new deals were signed. St David’s latest lettings announcements has included that of premium doughnut retailer Krispy Kreme which is opening its first Welsh store after a Facebook campaign called for them to come to the city.
An 800-strong Facebook Page petitioned for Krispy Kreme to open in Cardiff and hundreds of fans left messages on St David’s own Facebook Page making the retailer the most requested brand that St David’s has brought to Cardiff.
