Lots of ‘egg-stra’ fun this Easter and May bank holiday at the centre

19th April 2011

Easter and May bank holiday at the Wales Millennium CentreEaster workshops and entertainment for people of all ages, a celebration of Welsh artists and musicians, and a tribute to television’s longest running soap opera are just some of the activities and performances at Wales Millennium Centre this Easter and May Bank Holiday weekend.

Free, family-friendly workshops will be held in the Centre during the Easter weekend (23-25 April). Artist Catrin Williams will work with children and their families to create a large mural called ‘Our Centre’ pieced together from individual drawings based on their thoughts about the Centre. There will also be an opportunity to make and paint clay tiles and create fabric Easter eggs.

Walkabout acts will provide free entertainment in and around the Glanfa stage area. 'Balloonatic' will be back at the Centre creating colourful animals, hats and toys from balloons; 'Dan the Hat' will amaze with his hat and yo-yo tricks and 'Dennis Teeth' will play some wonderful music on a household saw. (Performances at various times of the day 22-23 April)

Textile artist Cefyn Burgess’ latest exhibition will be in the Centre’s Glanfa exhibition spaces on levels one and two. ‘Expressions of a Culture’ looks at the history of chapels in Wales and how they have knitted and divided local communities. The exhibition also includes examples of crockery used by individual chapels as a way of defining the differences between them. (‘Expression of a Culture’ from now until 31 May)

New comedy play ‘Corrie!’ celebrates Coronation Street’s best moments over the last half century. It features some of the TV series’ most memorable characters from Jack and Vera to Ken and Deidre and Steve and Becky, not forgetting Gail’s four weddings. Penned by award-winning Coronation Street scriptwriter, Jonathan Harvey, ‘Corrie!’ brings the wit and humour of the much loved programme live on stage. ('Corrie!' April 25-28 and 30)

During the day of the Royal Wedding (29 April), the Centre will be open to the public as usual. There will be free live jazz from Linda Angelis, Swing Easy and Emily Wright on the Glanfa stage. Visitors to the Centre can watch the wedding ceremony live on special screens also situated near the Glanfa stage. And the Centre’s ffresh Bar and Restaurant, now a Wales the True Taste Partner for its commitment to using the best locally sourced food, will be serving bar snacks, lunch and dinner, and some special cocktails.

On the eve of the first day of the Celtic summer (30 April), the Centre will hold a free ‘Nos Calan Mai’ concert, celebrating a variety of Welsh music. Performing from midday during the day-long event will be Sweet Baboo; H Hawkline; Gentle Good; Gildas; Adran D; and Trwbador.

The Easter and Bank holiday celebrations culminate with ‘Butetown Bay Jazz Heritage Festival’. Now in its third year, the Festival includes a full day of free concerts, exhibitions and workshops. It has quickly established itself as an event that attracts premier jazz musicians and family audiences who can enjoy the music, surroundings and atmosphere reminiscent of Tiger Bay in its musical heyday. The day is led by local jazz singers and Festival founders Patti Flynn and Humie Webbe. (‘Butetown Bay Jazz Heritage Festival’ 30 April-1 May.)

Mark Taylor, Chief Executive, Wales Millennium Centre said: ‘Easter is traditionally a busy time for the Centre, both as a tourist attraction and an arts venue. Our emphasis is on offering plenty of free activity for families in a relaxed atmosphere and providing a national platform for a wide variety of different types of art forms.’
