BigLittleCity: Cardiff Exhibition

A  new exhibition at the newly opened “Cardiff Story” museum in the Old Library building, the Hayes launches next week. BigLittleCity is a celebration of the city and its creative talent. The exhibition will include photography, film, writing, music, animation, illustration, painting and beyond running from 14th April -22nd July 2011.

With work from established artists, like legendary photographer David Hurn, Charles Byrd’s magical machines and a new take on the Cardiff coat of arms from Super Furry Animals illustrator Pete Fowler, the exhibition will also showcase emerging artists as well as creating lots of opportunities for the public to get involved.

BigLittleCity is the brainchild of local photographer Dan Green. Dan’s first solo exhibition in 2008 Cardiff: Characters showed his perspective on the people who make the city what it is.

“People responded brilliantly to the work” says Green from Roath “...but the one criticism I heard time and again was that I hadn’t shown this person or that person... basically that it was only my take on the city; and they were right!” Dan decided then that, if an exhibition wanted to truly reflect life in a city as diverse as Cardiff, it would have to include as many voices as possible.

“We put a call out for artists to submit any work they felt reflected their city, and we were truly overwhelmed by the response. There’s something magical here that makes people feel passionate about Cardiff”

So many artists responded in fact that the exhibition will continue to evolve after the doors open, with new work from solo artists changing twice before the exhibition ends in late July.

Cardiff’s vibrant music scene will be represented too, with unplugged Saturday afternoon performances, curated by Spillers Records, from the likes of Martyn Joseph, Richard James (Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci) and Llwybr Llaethog.

Not content with just creating a platform for artists - BigLittleCity has a number of group projects open to the public. You can write about your favourite place, design a new t-shirt for Spillers Records, or create your own coat of arms for the city.
