Jungle fun for all the family

10th May 2011

The Jungle Book comes to the New TheatreMaking a welcome return to the New Theatre is Rudyard Kipling’s timeless story The Jungle Book from Tuesday 24 – Saturday 28 May. Back by popular demand, and coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Kipling’s death, the show is packed full of animal magic and all-new songs.

The Jungle Book tells the exciting story of Mowgli, a young boy who was raised in the jungle by a pack of wolves. When Shere Khan the tiger swears to kill the child, Baloo and Bagheera agree to take him to the man village for his safety. But the jungle holds dangers and surprises for them all and Mowgli’s adventure begins.

The Birmingham Stage Company is in its 19th year of producing high quality shows for children including Horrible Histories and Tom’s Midnight Garden. They commissioned top children’s playwright Stuart Paterson to adapt the classic tale and BB Cooper to compose special music for the production.

This colourful show uses a mix of costumes, puppetry and stylised movement to transform the actors into the animal characters first made popular by the 1967 animated film. Top animal expert Peter Elliot devised the movement of the bear, tiger and monkey characters. He has previously created the animal movement for the film Gorillas in the Mist.

The talented company of ten is led by Samuel Hargreaves as Mowgli plus Peter Sowerbutts as Shere Khan, Zethryn Taitte as Bagheera, Laura Waggott as Kaa, Rob Hughes as Baloo, Craig Painting as Tabaqui, Natasha Lewis as Racha, Joe Sterling as Luna, Jennifer O’Neil as Taak and Welsh actor Iwan Tudor as Arkela.

The Jungle Book is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 24 – Saturday 28 May. Suggested age is 5+. Tickets range from £8.50 - £17.50 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
