Shopping destination to be transformed at exclusive Student Lock In

An entire shopping centre will be handed over to thousands of students next month for Cardiff’s biggest student shopping event.

The Student Lock In at St David’s will see the shopping destination transformed at the free after-hours one-night-only event with exclusive discounts, goody bags and prizes on offer. The St David’s Student Lock In was trialed as a one-off event last autumn and attracted over 7,000 students, with queues running along The Hayes, Mill Lane and as far as St Mary Street. Its unprecedented success has meant that the Student Lock will now be held annually, with the next event on Tuesday, October 4, once the stores close to the public.

Offers at the Student Lock In include 20% off Cult, GStar, Krispy Kreme, H&M, Springfield, Warehouse, Boux Avenue, Peacocks, Olie & Nic, Dune and Folli Follie. Meanwhile, on The Hayes, Cath Kidston, Crew and Leia will be offering a 20% discount and student shoppers at Reiss will have a 10% discount and free drinks.

Steven Madeley, centre director for St David’s, said: “The success of Student Lock In really has been unprecedented. Last year, we initially expected to be hosting an event for a couple of thousand students but were swamped with more than 7,000 students running through our doors demonstrating just what an appetite there is for a student shopping event. This year, Student Lock In will be even bigger and better with more than 80 stores staying open after hours. The malls within St David’s will have a completely different atmosphere, offering a more fun and young shopping experience for students with DJs and activity throughout the centre. We are already seeing a start to the frenzy among students in advance of the event and are anticipating that the excitement will continue to grow.”

The Student Lock In will run from 8pm until 10.30pm and this year students will be able to pre-register for an exclusive access pass to avoid having to queue. Registration will begin at 5pm on The Hayes for students with a valid student ID.

Other discounts on the night include Thomas Cook which will be offering 10% discounts on Club 18-30 holidays while Virgin Media and Vodafone will be selling exclusive student discount mobile phone contracts. Within the restaurant quarter Eastside, there will be 25% off YO! Sushi, 10% off BOOF and buy one get one free deals at Bellini’s Express, Yoo Moo and Cadwaladers. Nandos will be offering free chicken until the end of term to one lucky competition winner while new American restaurant Ed’s Easy Diner will be offering 25% off and giving every 25th customer a free £25 gift card.

Individual stores will be offering entertainment with a DJ and beers within Luke and Swatch transformed into a nightclub. Other discounts at Student Lock In include 20% off La Senza, Select, Foot Asylum, Jack Jones, Vero Moda, Pulp, Oasis, Jane Norman, New Look and Claire’s. USC will be offering 25% off with 10% off Nike and GAP and 15% off Calvin Klein Underwear.
