Leading North Wales artists to exhibit at Wales Millennium Centre

8th September 2011

New work by two leading artists from North Wales, Ann Catrin Evans and Ivor Richards, will feature at Wales Millennium Centre throughout September and October.

Best known for her large-scale sculptures, Bangor-born designer maker Ann Catrin Evans returns to the Centre to exhibit a selection of delicate works in metal, including framed sculptural works and jewellery.

Ann Catrin Evans’ unique approach to tactile material is familiar to visitors to Wales Millennium Centre. She is responsible for the door handles which she created for the Centre when it first opened and the sculpture ‘Siwrnai’ that hangs in the Glanfa.

Ann Catrin Evans said: ‘This exhibition feels as if I am about to begin at the beginning once again. I enjoyed working with softer metals, experimenting and creating simple objects without the restrictions of a given brief. Some of these objects are very fragile - perhaps a reflection of my own condition – and other images express stillness and contemplation.

‘I truly appreciate this opportunity to exhibit at Wales Millennium Centre, it has been a great incentive for me to start along this new path of creative discovery and exploration.’

Award-winning sculptor Ivor Richards lives near the slate quarries of Bethesda and breathes new life into this ancient and native material through carving and cutting to reveal the slate’s different textures, from the harsh, the riven and the velvet-smooth.

He combines slate with different media such as lead, twine or wax, to create pieces that are tactile and beautiful and which also serve as metaphors for the issues that we face in our daily lives. Richards is also inspired by Welsh legend and history.

Ivor Richards said: In this exhibition, ‘The Impossible Mark’, I’ve been exploring the theme of ‘cuts’. The result is that the work is largely abstract with an element of the surreal, often appearing as an optical illusion. I always aim for the images to be in tune with the material’s age and durability.’

Ivor Richards has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad, and has also led the Wales team in the International Snow Sculpture competitions.

Ann Catrin Evans’ ‘Y Cain a’r Cryf: New Perspectives’ and ‘The Impossible Mark’ by Ivor Richards are at Wales Millennium Centre from 12 September – 30 October. The exhibition is free of charge. There will be an opportunity to purchase pieces from the exhibition. Prices range from around £10 to over £1000.
