Cardiff enters top 10 UK destinations
20th January 2012

Cardiff has powered its way into the top 10 most popular choices for UK breaks, according to the travel website Expedia.
Expedia lists Cardiff as number eight for UK travellers, putting it ahead of York and near neighbour Bristol.
With a new Doctor Who Experience opening in the summer, Olympic football, international cricket and world championship water sports, Cardiff is well placed to attract even more visitors.
The top 10 listing is based on bookings taken on the expedia.co.uk website. Cardiff’s success comes at a time when Expedia reports that the UK is top of its search chart for the second year running.
Richard Thomas, managing director of Cardiff & Co, the company set up to promote the city region, said: “Cardiff is really making an impression as a city for breaks. It is great news that we are among Expedia’s top 10 UK destinations but it’s not a surprise.
“Cardiff is ready take advantage of a surge in UK breaks. Cardiff and its surrounding region have a really good offer for travellers who prefer to stay in the UK.
“The city has an impressive programme of events for 2012, building on what we have come to expect. It’s fantastic that the Olympic games kick off in Cardiff with the first football matches at the Millennium Stadium two days before the official London opening ceremony.”
In March, Cardiff will welcome the first Doctor Who Convention to be held since the hit BBC series came back to the TV. Then during the summer, the new Doctor Who Experience will open at Porth Teigr in Cardiff Bay. The city has also been chosen as the venue for the Classic FM Live concert at the Wales Millennium Centre in March.
Speedway Grand Prix, Extreme Sailing and World Cup canoe slalom, England v South Africa one-day cricket and the Friend life t20 cricket finals day will all add to the summer sporting fest.
Richard Thomas added: “Cardiff has the best set of events ever this year. These new events for 2012 will make the city buzz and because the Millennium Stadium is in the city centre, we are used to making space for large numbers of people to enjoy themselves at a variety of events. It doesn’t stop at sport and the Classic FM Live concert leads an impressive programme of arts events at the Wales Millennium Centre and other venues. We can guarantee all visitors a warm Welsh welcome.”
