The newly-named Principality Stadium is operated by the Welsh Rugby Union and is the home of the Wales rugby team.

The venue opened to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup and has since attracted RWC organisers back to Cardiff for the 2007 and 2015 tournaments. More than half a million fans recently flocked to Cardiff for eight World Cup matches including two quarter finals and Wales’ pool matches against Uruguay and Fiji.

Just short of seven million rugby supporters have cheered on the national side at 110 home Test matches, including three Grand Slams and four RBS 6 Nations Championship titles.

The venue can hold up to 74,500 spectators and welcomes around 1.3 million visitors per year to Cardiff’s city-centre. Events at the stadium deliver an approximate £130million boost to the local economy and help to sustain more than 2,500 jobs in Wales.

The stadium has the UK’s largest fully-retractable roof which takes just 20 minutes to open or close, at the touch of a button. With the roof closed, the Millennium Stadium is Europe’s largest indoor arena and has such attracted around 400 major sporting and entertainment events.

Football

In football terms, the Millennium Stadium staged six showpiece FA Cup Finals and the Carling Cup Finals during the construction of Wembley Stadium. The stadium opened London 2012 Olympics Games with the very first event in the women’s football tournament, two days ahead of London’s opening ceremony. During the Games a total of 11 games were played across the men’s and women’s competitions, culminating with the men’s Bronze Medal Final.

Live Music

On the live music scene, the stadium has staged an impressive line-up of international stars such as Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Take That and U2. Rihanna returns in June 2016 with her Anti-World Tour, after selling out the venue on her Diamonds Tour 2013.

Speedway

Motorsports fans will also be familiar with the Cardiff venue following 15 years of Speedway Grand Prix and the upcoming event on 9 July, as well as the previous GB Rally and the USA’s Monster Jam trucks.

It’s the dawn of a new era, welcome Principality Stadium!
