University appoints new Deputy Vice-Chancellor

28th July 2010

Cardiff University has appointed its first woman Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University’s history.

Alongside a number of other new appointments at senior level, Professor Treasure takes up the post having stepped down as the Dean of the School of Dentistry.

Professor Treasure became the first female Dean and Head of the Cardiff School of Dentistry in 2006. She held this position while also being the Divisional Director of the Dental Division of Cardiff & Vale University Health Board.

As Dean Elizabeth led a major restructure of the School and had overall responsibility for all matters related to the learning, teaching and training of the dental team. Her development of the curriculum led to the provision of an MSc in Conscious Sedation which is now training clinicians in a skill known to be in short supply. She also took forward the Modernising Dental Education programme by establishing close working between NHS and University staff, improving patient care and student experience.

Professor Treasure said: “I am very much looking forward to my new role in the University and working to meet the demands ahead in the future. The University has a clear strategy going forward which will help it achieve its aims and I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to help drive this forward.”

Professor Treasure takes up the post from 1 August 2010. She succeeds Professor Peter Blood who has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor since 2007.

Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant, said “I welcome Professor Treasure’s appointment at Deputy Vice-Chancellor. She brings with her inspirational leadership which the University is will benefit from, particularly as we move forward with a number of important strategic developments across the University.”

Other changes at Pro Vice-Chancellor level include Professor Hywel Thomas who becomes Pro Vice-Chancellor for Engagement & International. Professor Thomas steps down as Head of the School of Engineering and succeeds Professor Ken Woodhouse.
