New surf simulation set for the International Sports Village

Thrill seekers in Cardiff are looking forward to another world class sporting attraction making a big splash.

An indoor surf facility is being developed at the International Sports Village (ISV) that will further underline the city’s reputation as a centre of sporting excellence.

The Surf simulator works by pumping water up an incline at a speed of around 30 miles an hour forming a constant wave. 

This provides the perfect opportunity to learn the basics of surfing or bodyboarding but can also provide a challenging competition venue for elite participants. 

The exciting new facility will be suitable for all ages and abilities and with only a handful of similar installations across the UK, this is set to become another popular visitor attraction for the city.

The news follows Cardiff being named as European Capital of Sport 2014 by the European Capitals of Sports Association (ACES). The Welsh Capital has firmly established itself as a leading city for sport, offering state of the art stadiums and facilities including the Millennium Stadium, SWALEC Stadium and Cardiff International Sport Stadium.

The new Surf simulator, which will be built alongside Cardiff International Whitewater, will be another worthy addition to the city’s sporting pedigree and should be completed in 2012.

Executive member for Sport Leisure and Culture, Councillor Nigel Howells, said: “Cardiff already has a fantastic mix of genuine world class facilities and venues. 

“We’ve seen surf machines in operation in other places such as the Flowhouse in Bedford which is proving a big hit, and it’s something we’d like to see brought to Cardiff.

“The ISV has already achieved great success with Cardiff International Pool, and Cardiff International Whitewater. This new facility will build on that success and add another great attraction for people to enjoy.”
