Cardiff & Co chairman welcomes Vice Chancellor appointment

Bill Savage, chairman of Cardiff & Co, has welcomed the appointment of Professor Colin Riordan as Vice Chancellor of Cardiff University.

Professor Riordan, who will take up the post on 1 September 2012 when Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant retires from office, is currently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex.

Bill Savage said: “Professor Riordan will bring with him an excellent reputation and a strong international record.

“The retiring Vice Chancellor, Dr David Grant, is an outstanding leader for Cardiff University and at Cardiff & Co we have been privileged to share his wisdom and judgement as a member of the board of directors.

“I know the board will join me in saying that we look forward to meeting Professor Riordan as he prepares to take up his new post and hope that we may be able to work with him to continue to promote the capital of Wales and its university both nationally and internationally.” 

Professor Sir Keith Peters, Chair of Cardiff University’s Council said: “When appointing a new Vice-Chancellor we set ourselves an ambitious task: to appoint a person with academic standing, a commitment to high-quality teaching and someone with a clear view of the contribution that Cardiff University makes to Wales, the UK and internationally.

“In Professor Riordan we have found that person. As well as his outstanding leadership and management skills, he has a proven understanding of research, the teaching needs of students and of the wider contribution of higher education to society as well as the international context in which universities operate.”

Dr Grant joined the board of Cardiff & Co in 2008 when Cardiff University became a founding investor member.

Mr Savage said: “Cardiff University, has been consistently supportive of the work of Cardiff & Co. Dr Grant is a member of the board’s finance and general purposes committee, a body through which he  makes a significant contribution to the direction taken by the company.”
