Cardiff Metropolitan University students

Cardiff is a great city for students. It is safe, modern, compact and has an excellent social scene. Here you'll find all the practical information you need with regards to studying in Cardiff.


How to apply

Application for higher education can differ depending where you are from. Make sure you know the specifics for the course you want, the institution, and the entry requirements. The best way to make sure is to contact the university of your choice. Use their websites to search for the course, and length of study you want. You'll find both undergraduate and post graduate courses available in Cardiff, with subjects ranging from law to architecture to Zoology.

Cost of living and employment

Cardiff is one of the best value University cities, according to The Royal Bank of Scotland's Student Living Index. Top of the league four years ago and still in the top three – that’s consistent value!

Even though Cardiff is great on a budget, you may still need to find part time work to help you with your outgoings. There is a variety of work available in Cardiff, ranging from part-time jobs in bars, cafes and shops, to full time work during the summer. Most students on courses of more than 6 months are allowed to work part-time during term time for up to 20 hours a week.

Before you look for a job in the UK, check your passport stamp or visa sticker which will tell you if you can work during your studies.

- Working in the UK after graduation

If you graduate from a recognised UK university with a degree or higher in any subject, you can apply to stay on and work in the UK for a year under the International Graduates Scheme (IGS). The scheme was introduced in May 2007. To be eligible, you need to apply within one year of successfully completing your qualification. Find out more about the International Graduates Scheme.

Student Safety

Cardiff is a safe city, and levels of crimes against students have dropped by over 60% since 2003. Most crimes committed against students can be prevented with common sense and basic safety precautions. Cardiff also has a dedicated student liaison police officer, PC Bob, who provides information and advice to students throughout the year.




Your health

All UK students, and international students on courses lasting 6 months or more, can get treatment from the National Health Service (NHS). You will not have to pay for hospital treatment, but you may have to pay for some dental treatment, depending on your income. Libraries

As well as university libraries, Cardiff has a number of public libraries throughout the city, including the new central library. Cardiff Central library is located next to John Lewis at the junction of Mill Lane and the Hayes. With light open spaces, vibrant colours and wide expanses of glass it offers a motivating environment to study in, with spectacular views across the city. 




Language

Cardiff is the UK's only bi-lingual city. The first thing you'll probably notice is that the road signs are in both English & Welsh. Welsh is spoken by approximately 10% of Cardiff's population and is rising, but don't panic, you'll find everyone speaks English as well. For more information and a crash course in Welsh click here. As well as Welsh, Cardiff is a cosmopolitan city with more than 100 ethnic communities based in the city for over 100 years. One study has found that Cardiff has speakers of at least 94 languages.

Travel and transport
