Visit Cardiff - the home of Doctor Who

Cardiff, the home of Doctor Who

Welcome to Cardiff

Cardiff is indisputably the home of Doctor Who. The series is filmed on location in and around the city as well as at the new BBC Studios in Cardiff Bay. Just next door, the Doctor Who Experience has brought the Doctor home, making Cardiff the perfect choice for a Doctor Who themed break, ideal for fans of any age. And if you don't believe us, here's Matt Smith to tell you what he loves about Cardiff.

Following on from Doctor Who's 50th anniversary year, there’s a whole new set of locations to visit, so there's no better time to book your trip to Cardiff to come and see the home of The Doctor, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the stars of the show, in and around the city.

A little know fact is that the real creator of the Daleks, writer Terry Nation, was born in Llandaff in Cardiff, close to Llandaff Cathedral and the film location of Amy Pond’s home village of ‘Ledworth’. A blue plaque was unveiled in his honour at the house in Cardiff where he was born in 2013.

The Doctor Who Experience

One of Cardiff's most popular attractions is the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay, where you'll find an interactive journey giving you the chance to fly the Tardis and come face to face with Daleks, Silents and Weeping Angels. You'll also find the largest ever exhibition of original Doctor Who props and artefacts including the entire collection of Doctors’ iconic costumes from 1963 to the present day. The Exhibition is regularly updated with the latest props from the most recent episodes.

Tour the filming locations

Test your knowledge of the series around the city by spotting locations from the last series. The Wales Millennium Centre appeared in the episode 'The Girl Who Waited', Cardiff Castle was the backdrop to 'The Rebel Flesh' and The Senedd building featured in 'The Almost People'.

The Doctor Who Experience regularly run Doctor Who walking tours as part of the Doctor Who Experience, visit up to 30 locations featured in the filming of Doctor Who episodes, including fan favourites: Blink, The Impossible Astronaut, Vincent and the Doctor. Hosted by expert Doctor Who Experience hosts, and written by a former script editor for the Dr Who programme.

Alternatively, take a Brit Movie Tours Doctor Who Tour of Cardiff Locations. The 3 hour Doctor Who Tour takes in over 20 locations in and around Cardiff such as where the rift cracked open, Amy Pond’s village, Rose Tyler’s workplace as well as sites from spin off shows – Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. With the locations scattered around Cardiff the bus tour is a brilliant way to see the sites and your expert guide will also point out other interesting landmarks along the way too. Tours take place on Saturdays and on Wednesdays during UK school holidays.

On Fridays during school holidays and the summer you can take the 2 hour Doctor Who Cardiff Walking Tour which goes to sites around Cardiff City Centre. See the Brit Movie Tours website for tour departure dates and times.
