On Location

Cardiff is a major centre for the TV, film and creative industries, with some of the UK's most popular programmes being filmed here. With a range of architecture and landscapes, Cardiff and South Wales can be transformed into futuristic realities, medieval Britain or even Billericay!
Television
Cardiff Bay is home to the brand new BBC Wales studios at Porth Teigr where series such as Doctor Who, Casualty, Upstairs Downstairs & Pobol y Cwm are filmed. Other series such as Sherlock and Being Human are filmed on location in and around the city.
Doctor Who
Doctor Who is filmed in and around Cardiff, and if you're lucky, you'll often catch a glimpse of the Doctor or the Tardis. The series is filmed on location in and around the city, and makes use of locations such as the Millennium Stadium, Llandaff Village, Queen's Arcade Shopping Centre and Wales Millennium Centre.
Next door to the new BBC studios is the new Doctor Who Experience. Packed with amazing special effects and exclusive filming with Matt Smith this multi-sensory experience is fun for the family and fans alike. You'll be able to join the Doctor on an interactive journey that takes you on a spectacular adventure through time and space.
As well as this, you can take the 3 hour Doctor Who Bus Tour of Cardiff Locations or the 2 hour Doctor Who Walking Tour of Cardiff Locations.
Spin-off series Torchwood is based and filmed here as well as the US.
Gavin & Stacey
Critically acclaimed series Gavin & Stacey was also filmed nearby in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. The hugely successful series was written by James Corden and Ruth Jones. If you're a fan, why not come and see what’s occurring in Barry Island with Dave’s Coaches on the Official Gavin and Stacey Tour. Tours run from April to October at weekends (plus the Xmas and Valentines special tours), starting from Barry Island train station and are a tidy choice for fans of the show.
BBC family drama series Merlin is also filmed in the Cardiff area and draws on the legend of King Arthur and Merlin. Cardiff's Llandaff Cathedral has links to the King Arthur legend, as do other areas in South Wales.
Film
Cardiff and its surrounding areas make great locations for films, due to the variety and availability of the landscapes. Within 20 miles you can experience beaches and waterfronts, modern city centres, traditional villages and moors and mountains.
In recent years a number of productions have been filmed here including The Killer Elite with Jason Statham & Robert De Niro, Mr Nice with Rhys Ifans, 28 Weeks Later with Robert Carlyle, Outlaw with Sean Bean and Bob Hoskins and The Contractor with Wesley Snipes.
