Walking in Cardiff
Cardiff's city centre is compact, and easy to get around, which make it ideal for walking. See below for a range of city centre and Bay walks.
Cardiff's Centenary Walk is a great way to explore the city centre on foot, and find out more about how Cardiff became the city it is today. The Centenary Walk takes in some of Cardiff's most celebrated and historic landmarks, as well as some well-kept secrets. Find out more about the Centenary Walk here.
A free guide book and map to accompany the walk are available in English, Welsh, French or German to download.
Other great destinations for walking in Cardiff include parts of the leafy Taff Trail, Roath Park with its 30 acre lake, Llandaff with its impressive Cathedral and the stunning grounds of Cardiff Castle and Bute Park.
Walking in Cardiff Bay
Visitors to Cardiff Bay can now walk the Cardiff Bay trail, a circular route for cyclists and walkers. The 10km or 6.2 mile route, runs around the Bay and across to the seaside town of Penarth via Pont y Werin, a 100 metre bridge providing a link for pedestrians and cyclists between Penarth and the International Sports Village. Find out more about the Cardiff Bay trail here.
For a shorter walk from Cardiff Bay, you can just walk across to Penarth Head via the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path. The route provides a safe pedestrian and cycle route with direct access to and from the Inner Harbour, linking with the existing footway, cycle way and transport network through to the city and beyond. Find out more about the Barrage Coastal Path here.
Walking in the Cardiff region
Outside of Cardiff there are many great places for walking. The Taff Trail is a multi-purpose route between the Cardiff waterfront at Cardiff Bay in the South and the Market Town of Brecon in the North. 55 miles (88km) in length, it passes close to Pontypridd, Castell Coch, and for the main part follows the path of the river Taff. It travels through a wide variety of urban and suburban landscapes of those towns and the open moorland of the Brecon Beacons.
