Fun things to do in Cardiff for £5.60 or less!

Did you know that as of December 17th the toll to enter Wales from England via the Severn Bridge is set to be scrapped? To mark this historic day where visitors can now enter Wales free of charge, Visit Cardiff have come up with a list of 17 things you can do in the Welsh Capital with the £5.60 you’ve saved by not having to pay the car toll.

From heritage sites and free tours to boat rides and much more – there’s so much to do in the ‘diff you’ll be spoilt for choice!

 

1.       Experience life as an Astronaut

See the spacecraft that brought British astronaut Tim Peake back to Earth from the International Space Station at the National Museum Wales’ latest exhibition. The exhibition is free or check out the VR experience for just 40p more than the old toll at £6!

 

 

2.      Get festive at Winter Wonderland’s Sur La Piste bar

Celebrate Christmas in style and head to the beautifully decorated wooden chalet at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland. Enjoy a mulled wine or a hot chocolate for under £5.60 and catch up with friends and family.

 

 

3.      Wales’ most popular heritage attraction – St Fagan’s National Museum of History

Spillers Records located in the Morgan Arcade may well be the oldest record shop in the world, but Kelly’s Records at Cardiff Market is the best place to root around for rare 1st pressings and second hand 7” singles. You’re bound to find some absolute gems for less than £5.60!

 

 

6.      Let them eat (Welsh) cake!

If you’re visiting Wales you simply have to try some Welsh cakes – Bakestones located at Cardiff Market make the tastiest Welsh cakes in the city, and you can mix and match 10 different flavours for just a fraction of the cost of the toll at £2.90 – Lush!

8.      Experiment at Lab 22

Lab 22 is one of Cardiff’s trendiest cocktail bars. All of its drinks are inspired by scientific experimentation and are fun and innovative. One of Cardiff’s best kept secrets is Roath Park Conservatory. It’s a wonder to behold with exotic plants, flowers and even terrapins. This hidden gem is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find tranquillity. You can even feed the Koi Karp for an extra 50p.

Discover local history at Insole Court, where you can explore the beautiful grounds and most of the mansion free of charge, however for just £5 you can get a guided tour and experience a new permanent audio-visual exhibition, ‘This House is a Stage’. This brings the rooms to life and follows the fascinating story of the Insole family as they climb the social ladder.

 

 

14.       Sticky Fingers

Cardiff’s Street food scene rivals that of any other city with its award winning vendors. Sticky Fingers is the latest venture from the scene, a permanent street food hall in the Brewery Quarter and the perfect place to try some fab finger food and a couple of pints of Brains.

 

 

15. Whose coat’s that jacket?

Cardiff has some amazing vintage clothing establishments but Flamingos Vintage in the Capitol Shopping Centre provides banging clothes at a budget. You pay by weight, meaning you could leave with a couple of groovy shirts or t shirts for this price.

 

 

16. A tour of Y Senedd – National Assembly for Wales

You have to take a free tour of this unique landmark, which is both architecturally and culturally significant. The home of Welsh devolution is a must for anyone who wants to find out about Welsh culture and politics.

17. Get Jazzy with it!

At the world renowned RWCMD every week at 5.30pm on a Friday you can attend the ‘Amser Jazz Time’ jazz club free of charge. Featuring two bands each week, it draws on some of Wales’ most exciting musicians. The event is free to enter so why not relax and listen to music with a nice glass of wine for £5.60
